Triathlon technology

Reaching peak performance is extremely difficult. Years of training. Sacrifices. Planning, strategizing, executing. Failing. Getting back up and improving. In short - lots of work.

Work only gets you so far. You have to be smart in your training and racing to get the most out of your races. Some people even cheat, doping themselves or drafting on the bike, but who wants to be a cheater.

A great source of legal speed comes from technology. Our beloved aerodynamic bikes, carbon wheels, and aero helmets. Without them, we are... not that much. Bibi studies the aero advantages of disc wheels and ponders the fatigue effects of stiff wheels. I mount my bottles between the arms to make things super aero. We are all a bit loco and it gets difficult to stay ahead. So what to do?

Always on the search for the latest and greatest to make me faster, I have cast my net a bit wider and sought inspiration from the recent string of amazing marathon performances of Kenyan athletes. Recently 19 of the 20 fastest marathon times were from Kenyans. What is it that makes them so fast? The thin mountain air? Their ridiculous VO2max? Their super thin legs? Well, I don't want to move to the mountains or take EPO, and I'm never going to be as spindly as them. So these rather obvious solutions are immediately rejected.

Hours of careful video review finally brought the answer to their secret:

If you look carefully, the top athletes always follow the racing line during a marathon. Not one step more than required, always on the quickest line to the finish. Good idea, but then again they have these nice little blue lines during marathons:

The problem is: in triathlons they don't have these lines, especially not on the bike course. If we had such a line we'd be soooo much faster. We need some creative thinking!

The solution is so elegant, so simple, so obvious: The Transportable Racing Line (TRL) (tm)! All you need to do is look down from your handlebar and there it is, always there to be seen and to guide you along the way:

Never veering from the racing line will give you that much needed confidence to push beyond the pain and to break those personal barriers. Now I hear the peanut gallery clamoring already that this is an unfair advantage, and that Bibi doesn't have a chance now that I have discovered this amazing tool. Well, I like to think of myself as a honorable sportsman. So here is his TRL - for when he gets overtaken on the bike...

Technology. It's amazing.

  1. Nico... why haven't you asked me for them before?! I already tested your TRL on my wheels last year!
It doesn't guarantee you a fast run!! Believe me!! :-)
So I will maybe follow the line but... will finally I cross it before?!??
